Taste and Energy: very sweet, neutral energy
Meridians: Enters all twelve meridians, though it is especially beneficial to the Spleen, Stomach, Kidney and Lung.
Properties: Anti-allergic, anti-arthritic, anti-inflammatory, demulcent, emollient, estrogenic (mild), expectorant, laxative, pectoral (moderate), soothing

Habitat:In order to protect the ecological conditions of the northwestern arid areas in China, the Chinese government has halted the collection of wild licorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis) in those regions, particularly in Inner Mongolia. These plants help stabilize the sand and retain moisture in the soil, making further collection of the plants a potential hazard to the ecological integrity of this broad area.

Narritive History and Literature name of Licorice:The taste of licorice is similar to that of aniseed and fennel, and thus licorice can be considered to be a spice. However, it has a long history as being of value as an herbal remedy, and it is therefore often considered to be an herb rather than a spice. The licorice plant is a member of the bean family, but its seed pods are hair free in contrast to similar plants. Its roots contain the very sweet, characteristic juice, and as a tribute to this, the plant is named Glycyrrhiza glabra ?meaning the sweet root with hairless seed pods. Corruption of the Greek name glyrrhiza led to the other official name, Liquiritra officinalis; the medieval name was gliquiricia from which the name licorice or liquorice is obtained. The sweetest sources of licorice come from plants growing in Spain and Italy, although it is probable that the original plant came from Russia or China. Spanish licorice was brought to England, and it became an important product in the town of Pontefract.

Narrative History and Description of licorice root.:

Liquorice was one of the most widely known medicines in ancient history, and records of its use include Assyrian tablets of around 2000 BC and Chinese herbals of the same period. Theophrastos of Lesbos, writing in the fourth century BC wrote that 'it has the property of quenching thirst if one holds it in the mouth'. Dioscorides gave the plant its botanical name (Greek glukos = sweet, riza = root). Its 13th century English name was Lycorys, a corruption of glycyrrhiza. The plant originated in the Mediterranean and the Middle East, but has been cultivated in Europe since at least the 16th century. In China, G. uralensis or gan cao, known as the 'great detoxifier', is thought to drive poisons from the system. It is also an important tonic, often called 'the grandfather of herbs'. Gan cao is used as an energy tonic, particularly for the spleen and stomach, and the root is added to many Chinese formulae to balance other herbs. It is also used for asthmatic coughs, as an antispasmodic and ulcer remedy, and to cool 'hot' conditions. The dried root is given to Chinese children to promote muscle growth. Liquorice is often used as a method for disguising the taste of medicines and as a flavouring in confectionery.

Roman legions considered licorice an indispensable ration for their long grueling campaigns. It was said soldiers could go up to 10 days without eating or drinking as the licorice properties helped to build stamina and energy, which allayed both hunger and thirst. In the year 1305, King Edward I, placed a duty on licorice sales, which went to help finance the repair of London Bridge. Ancient Hindus believed it increased sexual vigour when taken with milk and sugar. In traditional Ayurvedic medicine, herbs were used as special foods, serving to eliminate excesses as well as strengthen deficiencies, restore and rejuvenate. Licorice works on the digestive, respiratory, nervous, reproductive and excretory systems. It is an effective expectorant, often combined with ginger to help liquefy mucus and facilitate its discharge. Combined with cardamom and ginger it is considered a tonic for the teeth. Licorice is used to calm the mind, nourish the brain and increase cranial and cerebrospinal fluid, and to benefit vision, voice, hair, complexion and stamina.

Licorice is a time-honoured herb in Chinese medicine, dating back thousands of years. Chinese doctors divided their medicinals into 3 classes, according to their reputed properties. Licorice was listed amongst drugs of the first class because it preserved the life of man. The first class herbs were considered not poisonous, so no matter how much you took or how often you used them, they were not harmful. This supreme group of herbs was used to strengthen the respiratory system, keep the body agile and alert, allowing one to age in years without ageing in body. One longevity formula was made of 20% licorice, 40% gotu kola, 30% ginseng, 10% cayenne, with 2-4g of the formula taken 3 times a day. Chinese medicine was often called the medicine of harmony, as the whole focus was on the creation and expression of harmony, a most meaningful basis of health care. Almost all Chinese herbs are used in mixed formulas that may combine 2 or more herbs. Licorice was in many of these formulas, as I was told by a Chinese herbalist, "You always throw a bit in, it helps to detoxify very strong herbs". Chinese herbalism applies the principle of prevention by emphasizing the use of tonics and adaptogen, using plants that regulate, strengthen and invigorate the whole body. Ten different bioflavonoids have been found in licorice, that have an effect of strengthening the immune system, fighting cancer cells, and protecting from cancer.

  Description of licorice root:

Glycyrrhiza is a tall, erect perennial plant with light, gracefully-spreading pinnate foliage and dark green lanceolate leaflets that hang down at night. Long-stemmed spikes of numerous bluish-purple to white papillonaceous flowers grow from the leaf axils and appear from June to August, followed by small leguminous smooth-skinned seed pods. The roots are brown, long and cylindrical. Glycyrrhiza is native to south-eastern Europe and south-west Asia to Iran, growing in open fields close to running water. It was commercially cultivated until recently in northern England.
It is believed the plant originates from the East, however, it has been grown since early times in China, Africa, Europe, India and the Middle East. A very hardy, deciduous perennial to 1 metre or taller, growing from a strong root system made up of a taproot and many horizontal-spreading roots, spanning out 1 metre or more. Roots are 1-5cm thick, have a brown woody appearance, a yellow colour internally with fibre that can be pulled apart like long string. Above ground foliage forms on upright thin stems, pinnate leaves with 4-8 pairs of dark green elliptic leaflets 2-3cm long of fern-like appearance. Young leaves feel slightly sticky to touch. Lavender/blue pea flowers 1cm long form as axil clusters, followed by 2-3cm long smooth, brown pods containing 1-7 brown kidneyshaped, pinhead-sized seeds.
Plant licorice in well-limed, well-drained, loose, deep soil; preferably in a sunny position. If soil tends to be clayey, plant on raised beds or hills. Enriching the soil with compost and well-rotted animal manure is beneficial. Licorice should be given room to spread, at least 1-3 square metres. It is a good sign when the plant starts to sucker and send up new shoots, as it signifies roots are growing, with potential for future harvesting. It is the root that gives the flavouring, sweetness and therapeutic uses. Low growing annual herbs or vegetables can be grown around it for 1-2 years.
Collection:To assure high quality of the roots, they are collected with a minimum 7 mm diameter and more than 30 cm in length, representing mature roots with high levels of active components. The sliced root is prepared with oblique cuts, with 10 mm diameter slices, having brown bark and yellow cortex and pith, all aspects meeting the standards of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia 2000 Edition.
Processing:Dig out roots and rhizomes in spring and autumn, with the ones collected in spring of better quality; cut away caudexes, young buds, branch roots and fibrous roots while fresh; cut roots and rhizomes into long sections; dry under the sun.

Phytochemicals and constituents of licorice root.:

Phytochemicals and constituents of licorice root:

Constituents: glycosides called glycyrrhizin (about 7%) and glycyrrhizinic acid, triterpenoid glycosides (saponins), flavonoids (including liquiritigetol) and isoflavonoids, bitter principle (glycyrmarin), volatile oil, chalcones, coumarins, amino acids, amines (choline, betaine, asparagine), oestrogenic substances (including beta-sitosterol), glucose and sucrose (5-15% sugars), starch, tannins (trace), gums, wax.
There are many components in licorice, but the most active is glycyrrhizin, which gives licorice its sweet taste. It is 50 times sweeter than sugar. Other components are saponins, flavonoids, coumarins, sterols, choline, triterpenoids, lignins, amino acids including asparagine, gums, biotin, folic acid, inositol, lecithin, estrogenic substances, pantothenic acid, para-aminobenzoic acid, phosphorous, pentacyclic terpenes, protein, sugar, a yellow dye, and vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6 and E.Perhaps this is the reason for the broad range of effects licorice has on the body. When glycyrrhizin is removed from licorice, the product is called deglycyrrhizinated licorice or DGL. This product is especially useful in treating ulcers of the digestive tract because of the flavonoids, which are not harmed by the removal of glycyrrhizin.

  What is Glycyrrhiza uralensis?

Scientific Data of Glycyrrhiza uralensis:Glycyrrhiza uralensis contains two major triterpenes, glycyrrhizin (glycyrrhizic acid) and glycyrrhetinic acid. Glycyrrhiza uralensis usually contains 6-14% glycyrrhizin, which exists for the most part as salts of glycyrrhizic acid and ammonia, calcium potassium, iron or barium.
Licorice root is rich in flavonoids. The primary one is liquiritin, with isoliquiritin, liquiritigenin and isoliquiritigenin also playing important pharmacological roles. Licorice root contains a substance called FM 100, which is a component of the flavonoids of the cortex. It has been demonstrated to have anti-ulceration action.
Other components include amino acids, biotin, b-sitosterol, berniarin, umbelliferone, ferulic acid and sinapic acid.
 Vitamins: A, B1, B2, B5, B6, B9, E
Minerals: calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, chromium, cobalt, selenium, silicon, zinc

Licorice root(Glycyrrhiza) act as immune stimulator:Enhance immunity by boosting levels of interferon:
Research on Licorice has shown that it improves phagocytic activity of cells of the immune system. Many hospitals in China has undergone various clinical trials using Licorice against various virus infections such as the common cold, HIV and AIDS, viral hepatitis, vaccinia, herpes simplex, Newcastle disease, and vesicular stomatitis.
Licorice also appears to enhance immunity by boosting levels of interferon, a key immune system chemical that fights off attacking viruses. It also contains powerful antioxidants as well as certain phytoestrogens that can perform some of the functions of the body's natural estrogens; very helpful during the menopause. Glycyrrhizinic acid also seems to stop the growth of many bacteria and of viruses such as influenza A.
In the respiratory system it has a similarly soothing and healing action, reducing irritation and inflammation and has an expectorant effect, useful in irritating coughs, asthma and chest infections.

Licorice root as natural muscle relaxer and muscle builder:
Licorice root provides basic nutrients to the adrenal glands. Licorice helps build and strengthen muscle, and it is a natural muscle relaxer. It is very sweet and adds a delicious flavor to herbal teas. Licorice is included in most Chinese herbal teas and formulations because it is said to harmonize all the ingredients in an herbal formula. Licorice root is very powerful and should be used in small quantities

Licorice Root acts blood concentrations of electrolytes (ions) balancer:
Licorice Root acts to balance blood concentrations of electrolytes (ions), necessary for proper electrical conduction in neural impulse transmission, muscle contraction, kidney and other vital organ function. Licorice root assists in blood purification by protecting the liver, which detoxifies blood, from disease. It works in conjunction with other immune stimulators by potentiating, modulating and augmenting their activity and effectiveness. Licorice root is an excellent anti-inflammatory; as such, it protects and heals distressed mucous membranes of the lungs and intestinal tract, thereby relieving asthma and ulcers respectively. It has also been used successfully in treating skin infection or damage, as well as to reduce the symptoms of aching, sore muscles and inflamed joints.

  licorice root.grandfather of herbs:
Chinese licorice root, or "Gan Cao," has been popular for 5,000 years in China, where it is sometimes called "the grandfather of herbs." Chinese licorice root is said to revitalize the "Center" referring to the "middle burning space." It is believed to drive out all poisons and toxins from the system and to eliminate side-effects from other herbs used with it. Gan Cao is said to aid all other herbs in entering their respective meridians and is thus of tremendous importance in the Chinese tonic herbal system. It is also believed that licorice root will clean the meridians and allow Qi to flow smoothly.

  Licorice root build energy:
Licorice root is also used throughout the Orient simply because it builds energy. It is now known that this is at least partly due to its remarkable power to regulate blood sugar balance. It is also widely used to sharpen the power of concentration. Licorice root relieves abdominal pain and congestion and benefits the functions of the abdominal organs. It has been used successfully for a thousand years in cases of anorexia, a symptom now a growing health problem in the West.

Licorice root contains many anti-depressant compounds and is an excellent alternative to St. John's Wort. As a herbal medicine it has an impressive list of well documented uses and is probably one of the most over-looked of all herbal wonders. Licorice is useful for many ailments including asthma, athlete's foot, baldness, body odor, bursitis, canker sores, chronic fatigue, depression, colds and flu, coughs, dandruff, emphysema, gingivitis and tooth decay, gout, heartburn, HIV, viral infections, fungal infections, ulcers, liver problems, Lyme disease, menopause, psoriasis, shingles, sore throat, tendinitis, tuberculosis, ulcers, yeast infections, prostate enlargement and arthritis.

Treating a host of ailments:adjust hormones
Hundreds of potentially healing substances have been identified in licorice as well, including compounds called flavonoids and various plant estrogens (phytoestrogens). The herb's key therapeutic compound, glycyrrhizin (which is 50 times sweeter than sugar) exerts numerous beneficial effects on the body, making licorice a valuable herb for treating a host of ailments. It seems to prevent the breakdown of adrenal hormones such as cortisol (the body's primary stress-fighting adrenal hormone), making these hormones more available to the body.
It has a well-documented reputation for healing ulcers. It can lower stomach acid levels, relieve heartburn and indigestion and acts as a mild laxative.

Aspirin-like action:relieving fevers and soothing pain
It has an aspirin-like action and is helpful in relieving fevers and soothing pain such as headaches. Its anti-allergenic effect is very useful for hay fever, allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis and bronchial asthma. Possibly by its action on the adrenal glands, licorice has the ability to improve resistance to stress. It should be thought of during times of both physical and emotional stress, after surgery or during convalescence, or when feeling tired and run down.

  Application of Licorice with glycyrrhizin.:

Control respiratory problems and sore throat:
Licorice eases congestion and coughing by helping to loosen and thin mucus in airways; this makes a cough more "productive," bringing up phlegm and other mucus bits. Licorice also helps to relax bronchial spasms. The herb also soothes soreness in the throat and fights viruses that cause respiratory illnesses and an overproduction of mucus.

Lessen symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia:
By enhancing cortisol activity, glycyrrhizin helps to increase energy, ease stress and reduce the symptoms of ailments sensitive to cortisol levels, such as chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromylagia.

  Combat hepatitis:
Licorice both protects the liver and promotes healing in this vital organ. The herb's anti-inflammatory properties help calm hepatitis-associated liver inflammation. Licorice also fights the virus commonly responsible for hepatitis and supplies valuable antioxidant compounds that help maintain the overall health of the liver.

  Treat PMS and menstrual problems:
The phytoestrogens in licorice have a mild estrogenic effect, making the herb potentially useful in easing certain symptoms of PMS (premenstrual syndrome), such as irritability, bloating and breast tenderness. Although the glycyrrhizin in licorice actually inhibits the effect of the body's own estrogens, the mild estrogenic effect produced by licorice's phytoestrogens manages to override this inhibiting action.

  Prevent heart disease.:
Recent studies have found that by limiting the damage from LDL ("bad") cholesterol, licorice may discourage artery-clogging plaque formation and contribute to the healthy functioning of the heart. Research indicates that modest doses of licorice (100 mg a day) have this effect.

  Notes of Use Cautions:
Do not confuse with licorice confectionery which contains very little, if any, licorice and is in fact flavoured by anise. Can cause water retention and raised blood pressure. Prolonged use should be avoided if you suffer from high blood pressure. Can cause mild adrenal stimulation.

What is Glcyrrhizin from Chinese licorice root:

Chinese licorice root is a very different herb from the Western variety of licorice. The western variety can cause nervousness, an obviously undesirable side-effect. To the contrary, Chinese licorice, is energizing but calming, and does not have the side - effects associated with Western licorice. So be sure to get the Chinese licorice root. Licorice grows widely in northern China. Larger roots with smooth pulpy texture are most desirable. If the root, when cut in cross sections, is a rich yellow, it is of high quality. The sweeter the taste the more effective the herb, since the sweetness reflects the quantity of its most important active ingredient, glycyrrhizin.
In pharmaceutical tests, it has been found that glycyrrhizin has a function similar to that of adrenal cortical hormones. It is almost identical to the adrenal steroids. Laboratory tests in China have demonstrated that extracts of Radix Glcyrrhizin can help to eliminate or detoxify over 1,200 known toxins. This remarkable capacity as a detoxifying agent is virtually unparalleled in the realm of pharmacology.

Licorice root act as sexual enhancement:
Human clinical studies have demonstrated that the hormone-like actions of Licorice root are therapeutically useful, strengthening resistance, enhancing adrenocortical function, improving the regulatory function of hormones drugs, reducing the dependence of patients on the steroidal hormones and mitigating the withdrawal symptoms from steroidal hormones.

  Licorice root's anti-inflammatory action:
Licorice root has anti-inflammatory action similar to hydrocortisone. Glycyrrhizin and glycyrrhetinic acid are believed to be the components responsible for this activity.
Liquiritigenin and isoliquiritigenin, found in the alcohol extract of Glycyrrhiza uralensis, have been found to be MAO inhibitors, that is, they inhibit monoamine oxidase in the liver. Synthetic MAO inhibitors have been used in the treatment of psychotic patients who have mild or severe depression. Both Liquiritigenin and isoliquiritigenin are spasmolytic agents, that is, they relieve spasms (they are muscle relaxants). Isoliquiritigenin is 5 times as potent as liquiritigenin. It is being examined as a natural substitute for the synthetic MAO drugs used in clinical practice for depression.

Licorice root's powerful anti-HIV action in vivo:
Licorice root has been demonstrated to have powerful anti-HIV action in vivo. An herbal drug utilizing Licorice root is being tested in China. In addition, Licorice root has been found to induce the production in human beings of g-interferon.

Licorice root as an anti-ulcer agent:
Numerous reports confirm Licorice root's traditional use as an anti-ulcer agent. It has shown significant inhibition on experimental ulcers as well as in human clinical settings. It protects the mucosa against damage. One mechanism is by inhibiting abnormal gastric secretion by the gastric mucosal cells. FM 100 is the primary component involved in this action.

Licorice root has a well-known antispasmotic action:
The flavonoids in licorice root are responsible for this action. This antispasmotic effect plays an important role in the herbs anti-ulcer by relieving spasm of the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract. The removal of glycyrrhizin from the extract both improves this action and reduces the side effects, including primarily edema. De-glycyrrhinated licorice root is available for those who cannot use normal licorice due to the edemic side effects. FM 100, the anti-ulcer component of Licorice root, has also been shown to have mild anticonvulsant, anti-spasmotic and analgesic actions. When Licorice root is combined with Paeonia albiflora, or when FM 100 is used with paeonin (the active component of Paeonia albiflora), the antispasmotic, anticonvulsant and analgesic actions are greatly increased, confirming the famous combination in traditional Chinese herbalism.

The detoxicant action of Licorice root:
The detoxicant action that has classically been attributed to Licorice root has also been verified. The administration of Licorice root, its extract or of glycyrrhizine have all demonstrated powerful detoxicant actions against toxins such as cocaine, chloral hydrate, strychnine, urethane, arsenobenzene and mercurous chloride. It has also been shown to have detoxicant action against caffeine, nicotine and barbiturates. It has also been used to detoxify snake and spider venom. Given along with snake antiserum, the results were better than snake antiserum alone. However, Licorice root is not effective in detoxifying morphine, ephedrine and epinephrine toxicity. Various Licorice root preparations are now being experimentally used with antineoplastic (cancer) drugs to reduce their toxicity and to improve their effects. Excellent results have been reported in China and Japan. All this detoxifying activity is now believed to be due to the improvement of the regulative activity of the adrenal-pituitary system, and to direct adrenocorticomimetic actions of glycyrrhizin and glycyrrhetinic acid, among other mechanisms.
Glycyrrhetinic acid has an antitussive (anti-cough) action similar in action to codeine, but without the drowsiness. Licorice root extract or an herbal tea containing sufficient quantity of the herb, can relieve irritation of inflamed pharyngeal mucosa. Licorice root also promotes pharyngeal and bronchial secretion, which in turn promotes expectoration.

  Licorice root extract Protect liver:
Licorice root extract has been shown in laboratory animals to significantly protect the liver from damage due to strong liver toxins.
Licorice root has a significant antidiuretic action, due to the action of glycyrrhizin. This action produces the one overt side effect of Licorice root---edema.

Licorice root as good female hormone estrogen:

Licorice is a good source of the female hormone estrogen and contains estrogenic activity. It is used for female problems relating to menopause and menstrual cramps. One study, showed successful treatment for women who were not ovulating.
Licorice may also be useful for protecting against and healing ulcers as well as a treatment for hepatitis.
Studies are underway regarding licorice as a treatment for Addison's disease, which involve inadequate adrenal function.
The glycyrrhizin in licorice stimulates the adrenal cortex to produce aldosterone.
Normalizes ovulation in women experiencing infrequent menstruation.
Contains a natural hormone that will replace cortisone.
Stimulates adrenal functions without depleting them (Addison's disease).
It soothes and heals inflamed mucous membranes of the respiratory tract.
 Digestive aid, protection against ulcers.
Licorice helps in healing gastric and duodenal ulcers:
Licorice helps stimulate the defenses that prevent ulcers from forming. It seems to stimulate the increase of cells that protect the lining of the gastrointestinal system.

Licorice has been given many remedial applications:

Coughs, colds, wheezing, lung complaints, hoarseness, mucus congestion, tonsillitis, abdominal pain, nausea, poor appetite, fatigue, food poisoning, fevers, fluid retention, edema, burning urine and kidney, bladder ailments, gall stones, allergies, cancers and melanomas, conjunctivitis, earache, toothache, age spots, senility, hyperglycemia, menstrual discomforts, vaginal thrush, endometriosis, infertility, candida, ankylosing spondylitis, muscular dystrophy, skin allergies, hemorrhoids, mouth ulcers, nervous tension, insomnia and anxiety, depression, hysteria, indigestion and gastritis, diabetes, drug withdrawal, malaria, inflammations, cramps, Addison's and Parkinson's diseases, epilepsy, poor circulation, to lower cholesterol, headaches, earache, herpes, wounds, burns, cold sores, psoriasis, carbuncles, syphilis, abscesses, shingles, and to fight staphylococci. Licorice infusion as a wash has been used on acne scars.
The intricate, multiplex chemistry in licorice gives it a wide-spectrum of properties and actions. Large numbers of studies have been carried out on its therapeutic benefits particularly for duodenal, and peptic ulcers, hormonal imbalances, respiratory and liver diseases.

Research shows its usefulness as an expectorant and a cough suppressant, with action resembling codeine. Doubleblind trials showed glycyrrhizin an effective means of treating viral hepatitis. Licorice has been found to heal mouth ulcers, as an infusion to gargle. Clinical trials reported in the 'Townsend newsletter for doctors' of using glycyrrhizin intravenously for the treatment of AIDS, which gave significantly marked improvement for patients. Glycyrrhiza in licorice has valuable anti-inflammatory properties, which many people find effective for arthritic and rheumatic pain. A folk remedy is made by dissolving over low heat, 1/2 a stick of licorice (break into small pieces with a hammer, this must be the pure licorice extract), 1 tablesp. celery seed, 4 cups of water in a saucepan. Strain liquid off and bottle. Refrigerate. Take 1 tablesp. three times a day until relief is obtained; then cease taking the mixture until pains in the joints return. If mixture is very thick, a little more water can be added.

Licorice root helps prevent adrenal failure by maintaining electrolyte balance. Research shows benefits for Addison's disease sufferers. Rather than contributing to adrenal atrophy, as synthetics do, licorice helps to preserve adrenal integrity. Licorice is a herb that can have marked effect upon the endocrine system. The glycosides in the plant have a structure that is similar to the natural steroids of the body. Overworked adrenals in hypoglycaemic cases with nervousness, irritability, stress, fatigue, and depression can be helped with licorice. Many who have taken licorice to support the adrenals find stress, worry and negative attitudes fall away, and that they have strength and energy to cope with daily life, and without the doped out sensations caused by tranquilizers and drugs. A lady called at the farm, and shared that she found licorice helped her to keep hyperglycaemia under control. She also said it helped calm her grandchildren who came to stay, as they tended to be rather hyperactive.

It is the opinion of La Dean Griffin, the American author of a number of natural health books, 'that many who suffer in mental institutions could be helped with this wonderful herb'.
Licorice has been found to assist the pancreas by stimulating exocrine secretions. Another valuable action of licorice is oestrogen support. This hormone helps to build the endocrine glands, and has been found to be especially helpful in post hysterectomy cases, and the discomforts of menopause. One research report stated that when oestrogen levels are too high, licorice will inhibit oestrogen action, and when oestrogen are too low, it will potentiate oestrogen action, and that administration of glycyrrhiza during the midluteal phase may reduce PMS symptomatology.

Maria had pernicious anemia. She started eating licorice root and colour quickly returned to her cheeks and she returned to health. Licorice together with alfalfa, dandelion, gotu kola, red clover and sheep sorrel has been used as a blood purifying tea. Licorice combined with barley and couch grass has been brewed in a drink called cure-all. As a metabolic mix for weight loss, licorice, dandelion and fennel are used as a tea.

Therapeutics and Pharmacology of licorice root:

*1.Glycyrrhiza from Licorice root stimulate endocrine system:

Glycyrrhiza has a marked effect upon the endocrine system. Its glycosides are structurally similar to the natural steroids of the body, and are responsible for the beneficial action that this herb has in the treatment of adrenal gland problems such as Addison's disease. Glycyrrhizin is fifty times stronger than sucrose, which encourages the production of hormones such as hydrocortisone. This helps to explain its anti-inflammatory action and also its role in stimulating the adrenal cortex after steroid therapy. It has an ACTH-like action on the adrenal cortex, increasing the production of gluco- and mineralocorticoids. It is used in allopathic medicine as a treatment for peptic ulceration, a similar use to its herbal use in gastritis and ulcers. It produces a highly viscous mucus over the stomach wall and reduces gastric acid secretion and eases spasms of the large intestine. It increases the secretion of bilirubin in the bile and lowers blood cholesterol levels.
Glycyrrhiza is widely used in bronchial problems such as catarrh, bronchitis and coughs. It reduces irritation of the throat and yet has an expectorant action. It produces its demulcent and expectorant effects by stimulation of tracheal mucous secretion. It is a potent healing agent for tuberculosis, where its effects have been compared to hydrocortisone. Glycyrrhiza is also effective in helping to reduce fevers (glycyrretinic acid has an effect like aspirin), and it may have an antibacterial action as well. It can neutralise many toxins such as those of diphtheria and tetanus. Its anti-inflammatory action accounts for its use in the treatment of chronic inflammations such as arthritic and rheumatic diseases, chronic skin conditions, and autoimmune diseases in general. It may also be used as an eyebath in conjunctivitis and other inflammatory conditions of the eye surface.
Glycyrrhiza has an antipyretic effect comparable to sodium salicylate. Asparagine is a potent diuretic, leading to speculation that its presence may reduce the chance of the whole plant increasing blood pressure compared with isolated glycyrretinic acid.
The solidified extract, sold in sticks, forms the basis of many proprietary laxatives, stimulating bile flow, with a gentle action in constipation. Glycyrrhiza can be used as a non-sucrose sweetener, and can be taken safely by diabetics.
Licorice has been used as far back at the 16th century in Europe to treat sore throats, menstrual cramps, fever, arthritis, respiratory problems and hypoglycemia. Introduced to the Native Americans by the English settlers it was used to treat earaches, colds, lung congestion and to disguise the taste of bitter herbs.

  *2.Licorice root as super antibiotics:anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects,anti-arthritic properties:

Besides treating ulcers along the digestive tract including the mouth, licorice may be used for viral infections like a cold, inflammation as in arthritis, menstrual and menopause disorders, herpes, eczema and psoriasis, allergic disorders, asthma, chronic fatigue, depression due to hormonal imbalance, emphysema, and hypoglycemia. It has a sweet taste, a neutral energy and a moistening action.
Glycyrrhizin is changed in the liver to glycyrrhetinic acid. Both these compounds promote the activation of interferon, a potent, naturally produced antiviral compound. Once interferon is activated, white blood cells are also called into play along with killer T cells to help fight against the virus. This is how licorice exerts its effect on cold viruses, herpes simplex I and possibly even HIV. Licorice also shows some antibacterial effects, but these are due more to the flavonoids than glycyrrhizin.
Licorice is also known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects. This is due to the effect it has on the adrenal glands which are responsible for producing cortisol, the body's own natural corticosteroid. Once again glycyrrhizin is responsible. This agent exhibits adaptogenic properties by stimulating cortisol production when there is not enough and promoting the breakdown of cortisol when there is too much. Because of this, licorice is useful to take after stopping prescription corticosteroids to boost the natural production of cortisol. It is also given in cases where the adrenal glands are weakened from constant over-stimulation, as in many autoimmune diseases. Glycyrrhizin also inhibits prostaglandin production, another component of the inflammatory process. Diseases like asthma, chronic fatigue syndrome, and eczema may benefit from this herb.
Another adaptogenic effect from licorice involves estrogen. Licorice shows mild estrogenic properties similar to other phytoestrogens. It has the ability to promote estrogen production and to interfere with the effects of too much estrogen, especially from outside sources. The flavonoid constituents are thought to be responsible for the estrogen-like effects, while glycyrrhetinic acid antagonizes estrogen where there is over-stimulation of estrogen receptors in the body. All this makes licorice useful in controlling the menstrual cycle and in relieving PMS and menopausal symptoms.
Licorice has an expectorant effect, which will benefit people with asthma or chest colds with tight coughs or difficulty breathing. It is also a mild laxative.Licorice tea is pleasant tasting and needs no added sugar. It can be made by simmering a few pieces of the root in a pint of water for 15-20 minutes. This can be done 2 or 3 times before new pieces are needed. DGL tablets are available in health food stores and some pharmacies. Licorice may also be found as a tincture. Most licorice candy today is artificially flavored and is not a true source of licorice.

One of the downfalls of licorice is water retention with a loss of potassium and sodium, which may lead to hypertension. This effect occurs with long-term use or high doses. For people with Addison's disease, however, this is exactly the type of effect needed. In Addison¡¯s disease, the body collects sodium and promotes water loss leading to a serious imbalance of sodium, potassium, and other minerals and water. For most others, though, licorice should be used in moderation with resting periods in between to avoid increasing blood pressure. DGL does not cause this problem because it is the glycyrrhizin that is responsible. Licorice should not be taken by people who already suffer from high blood pressure, edema (fluid retention), glaucoma, diabetes, congestive heart failure, with the prescription medication digoxin, or by pregnant women.DGL may be used in these instances except when inflammation is the focus of treatment. Without the glycyrrhizin, licorice is not effective for this.
As time goes on, there may be other uses found for licorice. It is still being studied, and one of the areas is in HIV research. It helps cover the bitter taste of some herbs and may be used by itself or in formulas. It has a wide range of uses and its pleasant taste makes it one of the easier herbs to take. It is much more than just a candy.

Licorice root is one of the most biologically active herbs in the world. Licorice root is an effective treatment for stomach ailments, because it exerts a soothing action on the muscosal surfaces of the GI tract, and it is frequently used to help these tissues heal. The licorice root derivatives, glycryuhetinic acid (GLA), deglycrihyinated licorice (DGL), and carbenoxolene sodium (CS) have all been proven to be among the best anti-ulcer medications available. Whole licorice and its derivatives appear to have the ability to inhibit gastric acid secretion with the advantage of being devoid of other adverse anti-cholinergic properties.
Licorice root helps prevent and heal skin problems. The conditions that increase the occurrence of acne-like symptoms during certain stages of the menstrual cycle may be affected by the consumption of licorice root.
The anti-inflammatory properties of the root have been considered responsible for its effectiveness in the treatment of numerous skin disorders, including eczema, dermatitis, impetigo, and traumatized skin.
It should be mentioned that the antipyrelic (fever reducing) effects of GLA have been shown to be equal to those of the widely used sodium salicylate.
Fever reduction is important to hepatitis C patients. My experience for several years was that I was always at about 99.8 degrees. My fever would rise after eating. It was extremely uncomfortable to live day after day, year after year, just a little bit hot.

Every time a doctor would record my slightly elevated temperature, I would ask why it was high. The usual answer was, "you probably just have a bug." Taking licorice really helped this problem.
Licorice root is used to remove buildup of toxic metabolic substances in the body, because it increases the liver's ability to filter out these wastes.
In the treatment of liver diseases (e.g. hepatitis and cirrhosis), GLA has proven extremely promising. In Chinese medicine, licorice is often used as a remedy for jaundice and is considered a great liver detoxifier. According to Dan Mowry:
Experimental work has validated the usefulness of licorice in the treatment of hepatitis, cirrhosis, and related liver disorders. Licorice is a good tonic for the adrenal glands and Addison's disease.
This is very important for the hepatitis C patient because you need to support your adrenal gland in many ways in order to conquer the virus.

Licorice appears to both mimic and potentiate the action of the adrenal-caiticosteroids, though it also differs in action from these chemicals in several important ways.
Licorice components have been found to exert a positive effect on the course of several adrenal insufficiencies, even in Addison's Disease, which is characterized by near total adrenal exhaustion.
The anti-arthritic properties of GLA and the aqueous extracts of licorice have also been shown. Comparisons of licorice root to hydrocortisone are frequently made in the medical literature in England, China, and countries other than the USA
In relation to the immune system, (which hepatitis C patients must become obsessed with boosting), licorice root and its derivatives have recently shown extremely promising results as interferon inducers, which is especially good news for the treatment of hepatitis C. (When was the last time your hepatitis C doctor told you that)?
At concentrations well tolerated by uninfected cells, glycyrhezic acid inhibits both growth and cytopathic effect of vaccinia, as well as herpes simplex, Newcastle disease, and vesicular stomatits viruses while being ineffective on polio virus.
It is suggested that glycyrhezic acid interacts with virus structures (conservable proteins) producing different effects according to the viral stage affected: inactivation of free virus particles extracellularly; prevention of intercellular uncoating of infecting particles; impairment of the assembling ability of virus structural components. Dr. Mowry further states:
Licorice root has acquired the name in China of "the Great Detoxifier." It is considered to be one of the primary detoxifying herbs in the Chinese herbal arsenal. Its reputation for this action goes back to the time of Shen Nong. It is widely believed that low level consumption of Licorice root will rid the body of poisons that would otherwise accumulate and cause disease or functional disorder if not cleaned out. In particular, it is believed to clean the blood and the liver. Though there are many detoxifying agents used in Chinese herbalism, most of them are harsh. Licorice root, on the other hand is mild and devoid, for most people, of side effects. It can of course be used preventively, which makes it more generally useful than medicinal herbs.

Many people use Licorice root internally as a general anti-inflammatory. It is used for redness and swelling anywhere in the body. Of course, if inflammatory conditions exist, one should consult a physician, but for low grade inflammations, Licorice root may prove to be extremely effective. It is also used as an antispasmotic. When combined with White Peony Root, it is a superb antispasmotic. These two herbs combined work synergistically to relax both smooth muscle and striated muscle. It is especially famous for relieving cramps in the gastrocnemius and feet. However, it is almost equally as useful for cramps and contraction anywhere in the body.
Another condition for which Licorice root is famed is for the relief of gastric and duodenal ulcers. It has been used to relieve hyperacidity for thousands of years and is a superb anti-ulcer agent. A small quantity in tea can quickly help heal ulcers in most cases. It is especially effective when combined with herbs like Gynostemma and White Peony, which themselves help relieve ulcers.
Licorice root is an indispensable component of the Chinese herbal system. It has powerful tonic benefits and at the same time has a wide range of healing effects that have been time proven innumerable times. The trick in using Licorice root lies in watchful moderation. Don't use too much,it's unnecessary and excessive quantities can have the side effect of causing water retention. Small doses are very unlikely to have any results but excellent ones.

Precautions and Possible Interactions of licorice root.:

  Safety:Is Licorice safe?

Licorice is one of the most beneficial, and also controversial, healing herbs. Advocates and users say it has been used safely around the world for thousands of years to treat a multitude of ailments. Critics cannot deny the herb's effectiveness shown in research, but insist that it can have dangerous side effects. Licorice preparations and even licorice lollies should be avoided in cases of high blood pressure, cardiac or kidney insufficiency, pregnancy, fluid retention, or myasthenia gravis sufferers (rare muscle disease). Licorice may be incompatible or interfere with prescription drugs used for the treatment of hypertension or heart failure. If wishing to use licorice while under medication, use under the guidance of a health care practitioner. Pregnant women are wise to avoid licorice, as it may create fluid retention. One adverse effect of over-indulgence of licorice lollies at any one time, can mean extra tripping to the toilet, as it can act quickly as a laxative. But then, I guess even this for some people could be a health benefit, as most natural health practitioners will tell us, a clean colon is top priority! When licorice root is taken daily, it is recommended that the dose does not exceed 3 grams. Use for 4-6 weeks, and have 1-2 weeks break. If taking licorice in large doses be sensitive to any of the following adverse reactions and symptoms: puffy ankles, facial swelling, shortness of breath, headaches, and general weakness. Be aware some people can be quite sensitive with any herb or drug and may have adverse reactions. In 20 years, I have only heard of one person experiencing rather severe reactions with using licorice as a tea, taking approximately 11/2g of herb daily. He experienced shortness of breath, fatigue, frontal headache, swelling from toes to knees, and burning sensation in legs and hands. In moderation, most people can use licorice safely.

  Precautions:

The use of herbs is a time-honored approach to strengthening the body and treating disease. Herbs, however, contain active substances that can trigger side effects and that can interact with other herbs, supplements, or medications. For these reasons, herbs should be taken with care, preferably under the supervision of a practitioner knowledgeable in the field of botanical medicine.

High doses of licorice (more than 20 g/day) may cause serious side effects. Too much glycyrrhizin causes a condition called pseudoaldosteronism, which can cause an individual to become overly sensitive to a hormone in the adrenal cortex. This condition can lead to headaches, fatigue, high blood pressure, and even heart attacks. It may also cause water retention, which can lead to leg swelling and other problems. An overdose of glycyrrhizin can lead to harmful conditions such as high blood pressure and even heart attack.

Although the most dangerous effects generally only occur with high doses of licorice or glycyrrhizin, side effects may occur even with average amounts of licorice. Some people experience muscle pain and/or numbness in the arms and legs. Too much licorice can also cause weight gain. These problems can probably be avoided if dosages are kept within the recommended guidelines. It is safest, though, to have use of licorice monitored by your health care provider.

People with high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, or kidney, heart, or liver conditions should avoid licorice. This herb should also not be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women or by men with decreased libido or other sexual dysfunctions. Use of any licorice product is not recommended for longer than four to six weeks.

Reported adverse effects: hypocalcemia, asthma, agalactia, rashes, impotence, hypertension, infantile diarrhea, heart and renal damages, etc.
Gan Cao is incompatible with the following products: digitalis, digoxin, tolbutamide, phenformin, insulin, glybenzcyclamide, aspirin, sodium salicylate, tannic acid, dihydrochlorothiazide, quinine, reserpine, ephedrine, pepsase, and berberine

Property and Applications of Licorice flavonoid.:

Licorice root is one of the most widely used natural products in the world, being safely used for thousands of years both in the East and West. Derived from Glycyrrhiza spp., especially G. glabra and G. uralensis (Family Leguminosae), it is now used extensively as a flavoring agent in processed foods and to mask unpleasant tastes of prepared medicines. In traditional Chinese usage, licorice is especially versatile; there, its uses are in four major areas: (1) to rid the body of toxins; (2) to complement other herbs in herbal formulas; (3) to treat ulcers; and (4) as expectorant, antitussive, mild laxative and in anti-aging.

Glycyrrhizin toxic side effects and deglycyrrhizinated licorice extracts:

Until recently, the intensely sweet glycyrrhizin was generally recognized as the major active ingredient of licorice root. Although glycyrrhizin does indeed show many of the effects of licorice (including anti-ulcer, detoxicant, anti-allergic, etc.), it is also responsible for the major toxic side effects of licorice, such as sodium retention and potassium excretion, causing edema and hypokalemia. Fortunately, we have now discovered that glycyrrhizin is not the only major active principle of licorice. The flavonoids also play a major role and without the toxic side effects of glycyrrhizin. In fact, a number of flavonoid and deglycyrrhizinated licorice extracts have entered the market during the past twenty years for use in ulcer treatment. But these extracts still contain significant amounts of glycyrrhizin and their flavonoid contents are not in high concentrations.

  Unique Properties of Licorice Flavonoids.:

Bioflavonoids have been shown in recent years to have a wide range of biological activities, including cardiovascular, antioxidant, antiinflammatory, antiallergic, detoxicant and antimicrobial, etc. Depending on their sources, these effects vary in kind and intensity. Licorice flavonoids are among the strongest (if not the strongest) antioxidant and anti-ulcer substances so far discovered.

  Anti-ulcer Effects:

Chinese and Japanese scientists have known the anti-ulcer, detoxifying and antioxidant activities of licorice flavonoids for at least two decades. The anti-ulcer effects have been confirmed in humans and products containing licorice flavonoids are now being marketed in China for treating ulcers. Their effects are reported to be at least equal to those of Ranitidine, but without the toxic side effects of the latter.

  Antioxidant Effects:

Although flavonoids from various sources have been shown to have antioxidant properties, evidence of strong antioxidant effects of licorice flavonoids was only recently reported.4 Using various test methods, researchers at the Chinese Academy of Science in Beijing and the Inner Mongolian Medical College in Huhehot found licorice flavonoids to have exceptionally strong antioxidant effects that were over 100 times stronger than that of vitamin E. Thus, in the xanthine/xanthine oxidase system for testing oxygen free radical scavenging effects using the electron spin resonance technique, a dose of 2.58 mg/ml of licorice flavonoids was found to scavenge more free radicals than 258 mg/ml of vitamin E (20.6% vs. 11.2%). Based on this report, flavonoids from licorice are currently the strongest natural antioxidants known.

Toxicity:  Licorice flavonoids have very low toxicity. This is not surprising because they are derived from a widely used herb whose only toxicity seems to be due to glycyrrhizin. Acute toxicity (LD50) of licorice flavonoids in mice is 845 mg/kg i.p. Chronic toxicity studies in dogs showed them to be devoid of any toxic effects on the heart, liver, kidney and other organs. They also did not cause any change in the levels of serum electrolytes (K+, Na+, and Cl-) as does glycyrrhizin.

Suggested Uses:  In drinks, juices, capsules, tablets and other formulations; also in skin care cosmetics (lotions, creams, etc).Use Levels: 20-100 mg/day for oral products and 0.01%-0.2% in cosmetics.
