   What is Cistanche.Herba Cistanche,Rou Cong Rong? What is it used for?:

  Origin:
 The dried pulpy stem with scales of Cistanche salsa (C. A. Mey) G. Beck., an annual parasitic plant, growing froom the base of the broom plant and some other plants, of the family Orobanchaceae. Native to North America and east Asia, it is grown on sandy soils in California, USA, and northwest China.
 In China, cistanche is produced chiefly in Ningxia, Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Xinjiang and Qinghai. It is dug in spring when its seedling still does not or just comes up out of the earth. Following removal of the inflorescence, it is cut into segments and dried in the sun, which is termed as "sweet cistanche." Those collected in autumn are soaked in salt water, and termed as "salty cistanche"; after getting rid of salt,they are sliced, dried in the sun or steamed with water and wine and dried in air.
 Also called Broomrape, Desert Broom Rape, or Desert Living Cistanche. Stem flattened and cylindrical, slightly curved; usually 3-15 cm long, 2-8 cm in diameter. Outer surface reddish-brown or greyishbrown, densely covered with imbricate (overlapping like tiles on a roof) fleshy scales; apex of scales usually broken. Heavy; hard, fairly pliable, does not break easily; when broken, surface reddish-brown, with pale brown punctiform (dot-like) vascular bundles arranged in undulate (wavy) annulations. Odour: faint; taste: sweet and slightly bitter.

 The Chinese drug "Rou Cong-rong" (Herba Cistanchis) is one of the commonly used drugs in Chinese traditional medicine. It is used to reinforce the vital function of kidney, especially that of the sexual organs and induce laxation, for the treatment of impotence, premature ejaculation in men, infertility, morbid leukorrhea, profuse metrorrhagia in women, and chronic constipation in the aged. This paper deals with the qualitative and quantitative analysis of phenylethanoid glycosides of four species and one variety of Genus Cistanche and 23 lots of commercial crude drugs of Herba Cistanchis by RP-HPLC.
 
 The results were as follows: the chemical constituents of Cistanche deserticola Ma, C. salsa (C. A. Mey) G. Beck, C. salsa var. albiflora P. F. Tu et Z. C. Lou and C. tubulosa were similar while those of C. sinensis were different from the others; the contents of echinacoside and acteoside of C. salsa, which were 2.13% and 1.51%, were the highest of the genus Cistanche. An ODS column (Alltima C18, 5 microns, 250 x 4.6 mm) was employed. Linear gradient elution of acetonitrile-1.5% acetic acid was used as mobile phase, and concentration of acetontrile was from 8% to 20% (0-60 min) in the qualitative analysis, and from 11.5 to 20% (0-35 min) in the quantitative analysis. The flow rate was 1.2 ml.min-1. The detection wavelength was set at 335 nm.

  Quality standard for herba cistanches:To establish the quality standard for Herba Cistanches. Use Method,A qualitative identification method by TLC was established for five kinds of active components(acteoside, echinacoside, cistanoside A, betaine and mannitol) and RP-HPLC was used to quantify the acteoside contents. Results: Qualitative and quantitative analyses were carried out for fourteen kinds of Herba Cistanches and eleven kinds of Yinpian.  Scientists of MDidea Group found that the acetone-H2O (9:1) extract from the stem of Cistanche deserticola showed a strong free radical scavenging activity.
 
 9 kinds of phenylethanoid compounds were isolated from this extract.the name were confirmed as acteoside, isoacteoside, 2'-acetylacteoside, tubuloside B, echinacoside, tubuloside A, syringalide A 3'-alpha-rhamnopyranoside, cistanoside A and cistanoside F. All of these compounds showed stronger free radical scavenging activities than alpha-tocopherol on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and xanthine/xanthine oxidase (XOD) generated superoxide anion radical (O2-.).
 Among the nine compounds, isoacteoside and tubuloside B, whose caffeoyl moiety is at 6'-position of the glucose, showed an inhibitory effect on XOD. We further studied the effects of these phenylethanoids on the lipid peroxidation in rat liver microsomes induced by enzymatic and non-enzymatic methods. As expected, each of them exhibited significant inhibition on both ascorbic acid/Fe2+ and ADP/NADPH/Fe3+ induced lipid peroxidation in rat liver microsomes, which were more potent than alpha-tocopherol of caffeic acid. The antioxidative effect was found to be potentiated by an increase in the number of phenolic hydroxyl groups in the molecule.

 Detailed Description of the Invention:

The pharmacological activity and Manufacturing method of the Compound Recipe Product of 4 Kinds of Plants to Increase Testosterone belongs to the United States' patent of combination of the pharmacological activity of natural product and the method to separate and purify natural product. The product of 4 kinds of plants contains the following four kinds of products: Herba Epimedii 33%, Herba Cistamchis 20%, Rhizoma Curculiginis 20%, Radix Morindae Officinalis 27%.

After using carbon dioxide to extract the raw materials of 4 kinds of plants, separate and rectify the extracted liquid and make it as a reserved material, and then respectively add 300 kg, 200 kg and 100 kg of 65% of alcohol in each 100 kg of raw material of 4 kinds of plants, extract it for 3, 2, 1 hour in backflow under the condition of 85.degree. C., merge filtrate extracted by alcohol, recover alcohol and concentrate filtrate under the condition of 85.degree. C., and then add 100 kg of water in each 100 kg of concentrated filtrate, standing for 6 hours at normal temperature and take supernatant. Then, through the post filled by WLD resin, use WLD resin to absorb, use 65% of ethanol to elute the component absorbed on the WLD resin into the alcohol, under the condition of 85.degree. C., spray and dry it. After gas chromatogram makes fingerprint quantitative estimation, make the standard product.

And the product can obviously raise the quantity of testosterone in blood serum of the rat which genital system is injured by cyclophosphane (See Table 3.).
