Where to find it. Salt marshes, damp low-lying land, river banks and coastal regions.
Flowering time: Late spring, early summer.
Astrology: Venus.
Plant Type: Perennial
Character: Good for soothing irritations and inflammation of the skin, throat, eyes, lungs, and urinary organs.
Note: Not to be confused with mallow leaf and mallow flower. Not to be confused with confectionery marshmallows; although confectionery marshmallows were once made from the Althaea officinalis plant, they now contain mostly sugar.
Parts used: Root and leaf. The flowers may be used to make expectorant syrups, the leaves are picked in August, when the flowers are just coming into bloom. They should be stripped off singly and gathered only on a fine day, in the morning, after the dew has been dried off by the sun.
Both marshmallow ( Althaea officinalis ) leaf and root are used in commercial preparations. Herbal formulations are made from either the dried root or leaf (unpeeled or peeled). The actual mucilaginous content of the commercial product may vary according to the time of collection.
Collection: The leaves are collected in summer during the flowering period. The root is unearthed in late autumn from plants which are at least two years old; it should be cleaned of root fibres and cork and dried immediately.
