Properties:
Sweet in flavor, warm in nature, it is related to the lung, kidney and large intestine channels.
Functions:
The fat in walnut is beneficial to the formation of albumin in the body. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is claimed that walnut is warm yet not dry like most nuts; hence, it is good for weakness and deficient vital essence in the elderly, nourishing the blood and vital energy, benefitting the lungs and kidneys and moistening the lungs, helping inspiration to relieve asthma, moistening the intestine and relaxing bowels.
Being sweet and warm in property, it can invigorate yang; and being greasy and moist, warm but not dry, it is capable of supplementing kidney-qi, helping inspiration and moistening intestinal dryness, frequently serving to treat lumbago (painful muscular rheumatism involving the lumbar region) due to kidney-deficiency, chronic cough and asthma of deficiency-syndrome and constipation. It is also an excellent tonic food.
Applications:
1.For lumbago due to kidney-deficiency, dizziness, tinnitus (ringing ear), tired extremities, insomnia, forgetfulness, spermatorrhoea (abnormally frequent involuntary emission of the semen without copulation) and frequent urination:
a) It is often used with herbs for reinforcing the kidney to keep vital essence, such as Cortex Eucommiae, Fructus Psoraleae, Semen Astragali Complanati, Fructus Corni, etc.
b) Crush 50 g walnut, and consume as one likes.
2. For deficiency-coldness of the lung and kidney, failure of the kidney in receiving air, chronic cough, asthma of insufficiency type, sweating, lassitude, and soreness of the waist and knees:
a) It is used with Radix Genseng, Semen Armeniacae Amarum, Fructus Schisandrae, Fructus Psoraleae, etc., to tonify the lung and kidney, help respiration to arrest asthma.
b) Pound 1,000 g walnut and mix with 500 ml bee honey. Administer 1-2 teaspoonfuls each day.
3. For deficiency of vital essence and blood because of old age and chronic disease and constipation:
a) It can be used with herbs for moistening dryness to relax the bowel, such as Fructus Cannabis, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Herba Cistanchis, Semen Armeniacae Amarum, etc.
b) For habitual constipation. Prepare 20 g walnut and 20 g black sesame, all fried to a little bit brown. Eat at bedtime once daily.
4. For nausea and acid regurgitation: Crush several walnuts and swallow with ginger solution.
5.Infusion: Use for skin problems and eye inflammations, and as a digestive tonic for poor appetite.
6.Wash: Use the infusion for eczema or for wounds and abrasions.
7.Eyewash: Use either a well - strained infusion or 5 drops tincture in an eyecup of water for conjunctivitis and blepharitis.
8.Eliminate parasites: Black walnut hull extract has been used for centuries to help control and eliminate parasites from the body. It can be bought separately or with the two other anti parasite herbs clove and wormwood.Taken internally, Black Walnut helps relieve constipation and is also useful against fungal and parasitic infections. It may also help eliminate warts, which are troublesome growths caused by viruses. The high tannin content is primarily responsible for its anthelmintic property, although other constituents such as juglandin, juglone and juglandic acid may also be involved. Black Walnut Hull is also thought to balance sugar levels and burn up excessive toxins and fatty materials. Primary Combinations:

Contraindications:
Do not use in case of cases of Yin deficiency with excessive fire, or in cases of cough due to phlegm-heat, or when experiencing diarrhea.
Safety of Walnut:
Walnuts are not a commonly allergenic food, are not included in the list of 20 foods that most frequently contain pesticide residues, and are also not known to contain goitrogens, oxalates, or purines.
Cautions on Use:
Excessive eating will lead up to diarrhea, so those who suffer from asthma and cough due to phlegm-fire, hyperactivity of fire due to yin deficiency, loose stools and diarrhea should not eat it.
Alpha-linolenic acid is a fatty acid found in many foods.
