Origin of Rhizoma Chuanxiong:
The rhizome of Ligusticum chuanxiong (S.H.Qiu. et al), Ligusticum sinense Oliv., or Ligusticum chinensis (H), a perennial plant, of the family Umbelliferae. Native to east Asia, the plant is grown in China.
The perennial plant grows to about 1 m by 0.6 m. It is in flower from July to August. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by insects. The plant cannot grow in the shade. It requires moist soil.
In China, chuanxiong is mainly produced by means of artificial cultivation in Sichuan province. Reaped in May, earth and sand are removed from the rhizome before drying the rhizome in the sun and baking it until dry; then fibrous roots are removed and the rhizome is sliced or parched with wine for use.
Irregular and nodular, fist-shape a pieces; 2-7 cm in diameter. Outer surface dull yellowish-brown, rough and wrinkled, with numerous protuberant annular (ring-like) nodes; top end with dented suborbicular (almost round) stem scars; lateral side of lower part and annular nodes with numerous small strumiform (cushion-like) root scars. Hard and solid, do not break easily. When broken, surface yellowish-white or greyish-yellow, with an undulate (wavy) cambium ring and criss-crossing striae, scattered with punctiform (dot-like) yellowish-brown oil cavities. With a distinctive and strong fragrance; taste: bitter, acrid, slightly tongue-numbing and then slightly sweet.
