Enriching the liver and kidney, nourishing the blood and dispelling wind. Use for insufficiency of liver blood, headache, dizzy head, head-wind, neurasthenic, insomnia, vexation and agitation, numbness of the limbs, premature graying etc..
Calm the liver-wind: For syndrome of liver-wind stirring inside, such as infantile convulsion, tetanus, epilepsy, as well as dizziness and headache due to sthenia of liver-yang or the attack of wind-phlegm. Recently it is also used for the treatment of neurasthenia, nervous headacke and hypertension.
Expel wind evil and alleviate pain: For migraine, arthralgia due to wind-dampness type, numbness of the extremities, and general fatigue, etc.
Property:Sweet in flavour, neutral in property,acting on the liverchannel.
Effects:Checkingendogenous wind to relieve convulsion, calming the liver and suppressing hyperactivity of theliver-yang, and removing obstructionin the collaterals to relieve pain.Relieves convulsions and spasms, calms and suppresses liver-yang, dispels pathogenic wind and removes obstructions in the channels.
Pharmacological Action:
Its active component gastrodin exerts as sedative, hypnotic and antispasmodic.
It may increase blood flow and decrease the peripheral resistance of blood vessels.
General Use:
In the categories of Chinese herbal medicine, gastrodia is classified as having a sweet and slightly warm nature with a neutral taste. Its traditional uses are to calm the liver and to clear the meridians by invigorating the patient's circulation. In the categories of Western medicine, gastrodia is said to have sedative and analgesic properties. The specific conditions that were treated by gastrodia include migraine headaches, dizziness or vertigo due to liver inflammations, convulsions caused by heat excess, paralysis, general fatigue, numbness in the hands or feet, and pain in the joints. More recently, gastrodia has been used to relieve nervous headaches, pain in the trigeminal nerve, nocturnal emissions, difficult breathing, insomnia due to stress, and hypertension.
Chemical analysis of gastrodia indicates that it contains significant amounts of calcium, magnesium, and potassium. Its active ingredients include gastrodioside, vanillin (from the rhizome), and vanillyl alcohol (from the tuber). These last two compounds are related to vanilla flavoring, which comes from another orchid called Vanilla plantifolia. Research indicates that vanillin has anticonvulsive properties. Other research suggests that the gastrodia tuber has analgesic and sedative effects because the compounds in it decrease the level of dopamine in the brain. Most of the other traditional Chinese uses for gastrodia have not been corroborated by research.
Major use:
Calming the internal wind and relieving convulsion and spasm. For suppressing symptoms of liver-wind no matter if cold type or heat type. Calming the liver and suppressing liver yang ascending, vertigo and headache. Removing obstruction in the channels to relieve pain. For arthralgia due to the wind, cold and dampness, or for numbness and paralysis caused by liver and shenxu (kidney deficient), for neurasthenia and insomnia.
