Botanical Description of Hoary willowherb,Epilobium parviflorum.
Habitat and Origin:
Epilobium Parviflorum or Small Flowered Willow Herb is a rare herb originally from central europe now found in marshes, beside burns or areas of disturbed soil, damp meadows, rocks, roadsides, edges of woodland and waste ground,Ditches, sides of streams, damp meadows, and hedgerows.Wild spread from Europe,North America,New Zealand,North Africa,Central Asia, north of Himalaya mountains, available in China provinces such as Nei Meng,He Bei,Shan Xi,He Nan,Shaan Xi,Xin Jiang,Hu Nan,Hu Bei,Si Chuan,Gui Zhou,Yun Nan,etc.(300-)500-1800(-2500) m.
Also known as Small Flowered Willow-herb, Epilobium Parviflorum is a remarkable herb that is often over looked as a weed. Traditionally a European perennial the herb has spread its many floating seeds throught various parts of the world including North America.
In Africa,it spread at Macaronesia: Portugal - Azores, Madeira Islands; Spain - Canary Islands,Northern Africa: Algeria; Morocco; Tunisia.
In Asia,it spread as Western Asia: Afghanistan; Cyprus; Iran; Iraq; Israel; Jordan; Lebanon; Syria; Turkey;Caucasus: Armenia; Azerbaijan; Georgia; Russian Federation - Ciscaucasia;China: China - Gansu, Guizhou, Hebei, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Nei Monggol, Shaanxi, Shandong, Shanxi, Sichuan, Xinjiang, Yunnan.Indian Subcontinent: India; Nepal; Pakistan

Crete]; Italy [incl. Sardinia, Sicily]; Malta; Romania; Yugoslavia.Southwestern Europe: France [incl. Corsica]; Portugal; Spain [incl. Baleares]
Plant Descriptions:
Height: 20-80 cm. Stem erect or ascending, mostly simple, terete, stiffly hairy.Leaves lower in small rosette ; leaves opposite, oblong, lanceolate, slightly toothed, sessile, longer than broad. The plants leaves 3-7 cm long and Plants typically grow 30-60 cm tall
Flowers: light-purple,isolated in the axil of smaller upper leaves, 6-9 mm in diameter, petals 3-9 mm long, sepals equalling 2/3 of the length of petals. Stigmas with 4-crossed lobes, the plant forms as a rosette of 4-6cm long, willow-shaped leaves, close to the ground. Upright flower stems, 30-60cm, carry small, insignificant, pale-pink flowers along the stem.Stigma 4-lobed, as in picture (white object in centre of flower). Stem densely covered with spreading hairs (visible in picture as a fuzzy effect). Told from Epilobium hirsutum by being much smaller in all parts and the flowers a pale purple colour.
This is one of the difficult members of this tricky genus to identify. It is usually quite hairy as the name suggests but not always. It does have coarsely toothed leaves and a club shaped stigma but varies quite a bit in appearance. The flowers are not small as you might think from parviflorum but just about the same size as other medium sized willowherbs.
Fruit Seed: capsule 3.5-8 cm long, averaged 5 cm long, with small and jointed hairs, split open when dry, to reveal countless, black specks of seed like fine dust, encased in a white, fluffy fibre that easily falls to the ground or gets carried with the wind, to self-seed.Plant used as counter-irritant and astringent. Rare in crops.
Other features: Leaves unstalked, but their edges not at all decurrent onto stem, unlike E hirsutum. Apart from these two, the other Epilobium with a 4-lobed stigma is E montanum, which is not densely hairy and has stalked leaves.
Hoary willowherb is the most beautiful of all the willow herbs. A perennial growing to five feet (1.5 m) with a large, spreading root and a thick, firm, upright stem. The first leaves are long and narrow, deep green on the upper side, silver-grey underneath. The large and beautiful pink-purple flowers are produced in a long deep red spike.
Cultivation details: Succeeds in most soils. Prefers a well-drained but moisture retentive soil in a sunny position or in partial shade. The flowers are attractive to bees and provide a good late source of nectar.
Propagation: Seed - sow early spring in situ or as soon as the seed is ripe. Division in spring or autumn. Very easy, larger clumps can be replanted direct into their permanent positions, though it is best to pot up smaller clumps and grow them on in a cold frame until they are rooting well. Plant them out in the spring.
