Willow Herb Species and Epilobium Classifications:Identification and Differentiations.
Species and class:
There are several smaller species of Willow herb and the following are the ones, with the medicinal properties, that can be used: Pink Willow herb (Epilobium parviflorum), Mountain Willow herb (Epilobium montanum), Dark-green Willow herb (Epilobium obscurum), Lance-leaved Willow herb (Epilobium lanzeolatum), Hill Willow herb (Epilobium collinum), Marsh Willow herb (Epilobium palustre), Gravel Willow herb (Epilobium anagallidifolium).
Of the varieties mentioned, the whole herb is gathered, that is, stems with leaves and flowers, but care should be taken to pick the herb in the middle of the stem.
The name 'Hooded Willow herb' does not refer to one of these species, but is another name for the Scullcap (Scutellaria), and the 'Purple Willow herb' is also not this species, but another name for Lythrum Salicaria, the Purple Loosestrife, a plant that is often present in the same riverside situations.
Small-flowered willow herb, Epilobium parviflorum SCHREBER [Fam. Onagraceae], is widespread in Central and Eastern Europe and in disturbed areas of North America. Small Flower Epilobium Herb species have been used as remedies in folk medicine, particularly in Central Europe, for the treatment of prostate disorders and abnormal growths.
This pleasant herb and flower tea was highly recommended by Austrian herbalist, Maria Treben, for ailing men with prostate abnormalities. Based on customer feedback to health food stores and companies in Canada and the U.S., small-flowered or small flower willow herb extract quickly helps men to recover from the annoying symptoms of prostatitis.
Applicable Willow-herb Species:
Several species of Willow-herb are with the medicinal properties that can be used:Pink Willow-herb (Epilobium roseum), Small flowered Willow-herb (Epilobium parviflorum), Mountain Willow-herb (Epilobium montanum), Dark-green Willow-herb (Epilobium obscurum), Lance-leaved Willow-herb (Epilobium lanzeolatum), Hill Willow-herb (Epilobium collinum), Marsh Willow-herb (Epilobium palustre), Gravel Willow-herb (Epilobium fleischeri), and Alpine Willow-herb (Epilobium anagallidifolium).
The Willow-herbs with the medicinal properties are recognizable by their small flowers. The colour is reddish, pale-pink to almost white. The flowers stand on top of the long thin pod-like seed vessels. These later split, disclosing many silky white hairs in which are embedded the tiny seeds.
Differences Between:Epilobium Species:
Epilobium parviflorum has stems with spreading hairs and relatively inconspicuous, red-purple flowers. The horizontally pubescence of the stem can cause the species to be confused with native E. strictum Muhl. and the Eurasian E. hirsutum L. Epilobium strictum, however, has entire, nearly linear leaves up to 8 mm wide and the stigma is entire.
Both E. hirsutum and E. parviflorum have leaves much wider than 8 mm, and both are distinctly denticulate with deeply 4-lobed stigmas. Epilobium hirsutum has more conspicuous petals, up to 1 cm long, whereas those of E. parviflorum (as the epithet indicates) are smaller, only reaching a centimeter in length. The leaves of E. hirsutum clasp the stem to halfway around its circumference whereas those of E. parviflora are subsessile. Examination of other collections made along the Niagara River beach, on the southern boundary of the village of Lewiston, revealed a second collection of E. parviflorum, deposited at BUF, indicating that the species is probably well established along the river. It is most likely also established on the Canadian shores of the river, but this remains to be demonstrated.
2 species of Willow-herb which can hardly be mistaken for the smaller species are the Great Hairy Willow-herb (Epilobium hirsutum) and the Rose Bay Willow-herb (Epilobium angustifollum). These must not be gathered. The first has large rose-purple flowers. It grows, much branched, in masses by ponds, in marshes and damp meadows and reaches a height of 150 cm. The stems and leaves are fleshy and slightly hairy. The Austrian botanist, Richard Willfort, who knew the Willow-herb as a medicinal plant well, does not mention it in his book. As he said, it could be easily mistaken for the Great Hairy Willow-herb which, compared to the Small Flowered Willow-herb, has flowers 5 times as large, its stems and leaves are fleshy and it grows a lot taller, but has the opposite effect. The Rose Bay Willow-herb (Epilobium angustifolium) also know as Fireweed, Blood Vine, Blooming Salty, grows in copses, waste grounds recently cleared and edges of woods and reaches a height of 150 cm. The slightly reddish stems end in long showy spikes of rose-purple flowers. When these abundantly growing Rose Bay Willow-herbs flower, they turn areas into fire-red patches.
Epilobium parviflorum Schreber:Identification
Herbs robust, perennial, with short-stalked leafy basal rosettes. Stems 18-100(-160) cm tall, well-branched above, densely gray villous on lower part, mixed above with short glandular hairs, often with raised lines decurrent from margins of petioles. Leaves subsessile or lower ones with petioles 1-3 mm; cauline blade lanceolate-elliptic to narrowly lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, 3-12 * 0.5-2.5 cm, both surfaces villous, base usually rounded, margin denticulate with 15-60 teeth per side, apex subacute. Inflorescence and flowers erect. Sepals 2.5-6 mm, keeled. Petals bright pink to dark purple, 4-8.5 mm. Stigma deeply 4-lobed. Capsules 3-7 cm, pubescent or rarely glabrescent; pedicels 0.5-1.8 cm. Seeds dark brown, 0.8-1.1 mm, coarsely papillose, with inconspicuous chalazal collar; coma tawny or dull white, detaching easily. Fl. Jun-Sep, fr. Jul-Oct. 2n = 36.
