Seed: raw or cooked.Do not eat the seed if it is too bitter - see the notes above on toxicity. An edible gum is obtained by wounding the bark.
Prunus Serotina or Wild Cherry Extract is a very strong anti-inflammatory. It acts with a sedatvie effect on the circulatory system to reduce redness. It is also a source of flavonoids, natural compounds that contribute to the integrity of capillaries, collagen structures, eyes, joints, and arteries. The anthocyanidin and proanthocyanidin flavonoids in cherries also have antioxidant properties to help disarm free radicals which can damage healthy cells. The fruit is astringent and has been used in the treatment of dysentery.
Fruit Stalk: The fruit stalks are astringent, diuretic and tonic. A decoction is used in the treatment of cystitis, oedema, bronchial complaints, looseness of the bowels and anaemia. An aromatic resin can be obtained by making small incisions in the trunk. This has been used as an inhalant in the treatment of persistent coughs. Although no specific mention has been seen for this species, all members of the genus contain amygdalin and prunasin, substances which break down in water to form hydrocyanic acid (cyanide or prussic acid). In small amounts this exceedingly poisonous compound stimulates respiration, improves digestion and gives a sense of well-being.
Excellent sedative in cardiac palpitation:
Wild Cherry has likewise been of service in scrofula and other disease attended with much debility and hecticfever. Wild cherry is an excellent sedative in cardiac palpitation, not due to structural wrongs. It is particularly useful in this disorder when there is nervous fever, tuberculosis or the debility consequent upon irritative dyspepia, anemia, chlorosis, or nervous diseases. Externally, it has been found useful, in decoction, as a wash to ill conditioned ulcers and acute ophthalmia. Specific Indications and Uses. Rapid, weak circulation; continual irritative cough, with profuse muco-purulent expectoration; cardiac palpitation, from debility; dyspnoea; pyrexia; loss of appetite; and cardiac pain."
