Normalizing the activity of female sex hormones: Chasteberry has the effect of stimulating and normalizing pituitary gland functions, especially its progesterone function. It may be called an amphoteric remedy, as it can produce apparently opposite effects though in truth it is simply normalizing. It will usually enable what is appropriate to occur. The greatest use of Chasteberry lies in normalizing the activity of female sex hormones and it is thus indicated for dysmenorrhoea, premenstrual stress and other disorders related to hormone function. Beneficial during menopausal changes. May be used to aid the body to regain a natural balance after the use of the birth control pill.
Restore a normal estrogen-to-progesterone balance: Vitex Chasteberry helps restore a normal estrogen-to-progesterone balance. It can not only ease but, with time, actually cure premenstrual syndrome, which has been linked to abnormally high levels of estrogen, especially if symptoms tend to disappear when menstruation begins. Vitex can also help with irregular menstruation (especially if accompanied by endometriosis). Vitex also helps resolve hormonally-related constipation. Vitex may help cure fibroid cysts that occur in the smooth muscle tissue.
Reduce undesirable symptoms of menopause and stabilize the cycle: Vitex Chasteberry may also help reduce some of the undesirable symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes associated with the reduction in the production of progesterone. Vitex can stabilize the cycle after withdrawal from progesterone birth control pills.
Vitex Chasteberry and hyperprolactinemia:
Vitex and hyperprolactinemia. In this study, 52 women with luteal phase defects due to latent hyperprolactinemia (high prolactin levels) were given either vitex or a placebo. Prolactin levels were normalized after 3 months in the treatment group and deficits in luteal progesterone production were eliminated. Two of the women became pregnant.
In another study, 13 women with high prolactin levels and irregular cycles were given a vitex compound. Their prolactin levels fell, and a normal menstrual cycles returned to all of the women.
Vitex Chasteberry and acne:
Vitex and acne. In this study, a chasteberry preparation was used in women with menstrual cycle abnormalities. Acne was either eliminated or improved during treatment.
Several studies indicate that vitex can help control acne in teenagers, young women and men.
In another study, 117 women with four different types of acne were treated with a chasteberry preparation for 1-2 years. Improvement was seen after 6 weeks and by 3 months, about 70% were free of acne. Some treatment relapses were observed after 3-6 weeks.
Chaste tree fruit proved as prolactin secretion inhibitor:
Chaste tree fruit from the species Agni Casti Fructus is used as an alcoholic extract traditionally to treat dysmenorrhea by regulating the menstrual cycle. Chaste tree fruit is believed to exert a dopaminergic influence, thus inhibiting prolactin secretion. Like Bugleweed, Chaste tree fruit has also been used to relieve symptoms of mastodynia associated with nursing. No special cautions are known with regard to Chaste tree fruit. However, some people taking Chaste tree fruit have developed itching and rash.10 If used during nursing, Chaste tree fruit may affect milk production and subsequently nursing performance. Furthermore, Chaste tree fruit extract contains a high alcoholic content of approximately 50%. Despite the lack of absolute contraindication to breastfeeding, Chaste tree fruit should be used with due caution, observing for any negative influence on nursing performance.
