Properties:
Mechanism of inulin(fructosan):Elecampane is a source of inulin (also known as fructosan), a carbohydrate-based fiber that is broken down and absorbed in the colon instead of in the upper digestive tract where most other foods are digested. inulin is converted into fatty acids that spread out to many different tissues in the body.
The name Elecampane is derived from the Latin "campana", meaning "country". The species name, helenium, is said to be named after Helen of Troy, who was collecting Elecampane when she was captured by Paris.
Elecampane is a robust and stately perennial plant. It was used by the early Romans, Greeks and Celts to counter the ill effects of overeating. The parts of this plant used medicinally include the root and the flower.
Dosage:Tincture: Take 1-2 ml of the tincture three times a day.1:5 in 25% alcohol, 3-5ml.Fluid Extract: Take 20 to 40 drops, three or more times a day.1:1 in 25% alcohol, 1-2ml.Dried root: 1.5-3g or by decoction,Elecampane tea may be made by soaking 1,500 mg to 4,000 mg.
Safety and Toxicity:
Muscle spasms and paralysis have occurred after single elecampane doses of over 6,000 mg (6 grams) were taken. Hypotension will appear when taken togethor with other blood pressure lowering herbs,may produce blurred vision, confusion, dizziness, or fainting.
