Used for common colds due to pathogenic wind-heat and sore throat with hoarseness:

 Being sweet, cold, heat-clearing and so light that it can float, this drug is good at removing pathogenic wind-heat from the lung channel, ventilating the lungs and treating hoarseness, so it can often be used together with weeping forsythia fruit (Fructus Forsythiae), peppermint, chrysanthemum, etc., for the treatment of common colds due to pathogenic wind-heat or initial attacks of febrile diseases with fever and headache; often used together with boat-fruited sterculia seed (Semen Sterculiae Scaphigerae), e.g., Hai Chan San, for the treatment of sore throat with hoarseness due to upward attacks of pathogenic wind-heat.

 2. Used for measles without eruption, rubella and itching:

 Being ventilating, dispersing and purging, this drug can dispel pathogenic wind-heat, promote eruption and relieve itching, so it is often used in combination with peppermint, great burdock achene (Fructus Arctii), Asian puccoon root (Radix Aenebiae seu Lithospermi), etc., e.g., Tou Zhen Tang, for the treatment of exterior syndromes due to pathogenic wind-heat and measles without adequate eruption; often used in combination with jingjie (Herba Schizonepetae), fangfeng (Radix Ledebouriellae) and flavescent sophora root (Radix Sophorae Flavescentis), e.g., Xiao Feng San, for the treatment of rubella, eczema and pruritus due to the mutual contention between pathogenic wind, heat and dampness.

 3. Used for conjunctival congestion and nebula:

 Entering the liver channel, this drug is so good at dispelling pathogenic wind-heat as to improve the acuity of vision and remove nebula, so it is often used together with chrysanthemum, white puncture vine fruit (Fructus Tribuli), sickle senna seed (Semen Cassiae), etc., e.g., Chan Hua San, for the treatment of conjunctivitis and nebula due to upward attacks of pathogenic wind-heat.

 4. Used for infantile convulsion, morbid night crying and tetanus (an acute, often fatal infectious disease that is caused by the bacteria that often enters the body through contaminated puncture wounds):

 Being sweet and cold, this drug can not only disperse pathogenic wind-heat, but also remove heat from the liver, subdue pathogenic wind and alleviate spasms, so it can be pulverized and decocted together for drinking with peppermint and hooked uncaria stems (Ramulus Uncariae), e.g., Zhi Ti San, for the treatment of infantile common colds with fright, convulsions and morbid night crying; this drug can be used in combination of cow bezoar, Chinese goldthread rhizome (Rhizoma Coptidis), silkworm larva, etc. for acute infantile convulsions due to pathogenic heat; for the treatment of tetanus, mild cases can be treated with this drug, which is pulverized and then the infant is infused with it mixed in yellow rice wine, while serious cases can be treated with it in combination with elevated gastrodia tuber (Rhizoma Gastrodiae) and silkworm larva, i.e., Wu Hu Zhui Feng San.

 Decoct the ingredients for drinking or pulverize it alone for infusion. It is better to use a small dose for a general ailment, while a large dose is required to alleviate spasms.
