Distribution and ecology:Cladonia Stellaris.
Distribution:Asia,Circumpolar; in North America throughout Alaska, Canada, and the northern United States. south to Florida and Alabama.
Cladonia stellaris is circumpolar. In North America it is common across Canada and in Alaska, ranging southward in the East to West Virginia, around the Great Lakes, and in the West to Wyoming. It is distributed throughout the whole of Norway, Sweden, and Finland, and is common except for at the outer coast. A map of Norwegian computerized herbarium material and field notes may be generated from the Norwegian Lichen Database.
The species grows on the ground, specially on poor soil and gravel. In cool, continental parts of Fennoscandia it is very frequent and covers vast areas, giving a pale yellow colour to forest floors, open planes, and mountains, e.g., the Rondane Mountains or the Finnmarkvidda Plane. It is so characteristic for continental forests types that it even gives name to them, viz. Cladonia stellaris-Scots pine forests and Cladonia stellaris-mountain birch forests.
