A Simple Combination:Echinacea-Goldenseal-Olive leaf Formula.
This formula is a variation and improvement on the Chinese Antiphlogistic Pills (Chuan Xian Lian Kang Yan Pian). The herbs in this formula have been found to be clinically effective for all types of inflammatory and infectious diseases including those of viral and bacterial origin making it the nearest thing to a one-stop herbal antibiotic or antiviral pill that one can find. They treat inflammation anywhere in the body giving them a wide range of usefulness. These herbs have been found to treat wide ranging symptoms from the common cold, flu, asthma and bronchitis with yellow phlegm, pulmonary abscess, tuberculosis and other infections. They are also effective for damp-heat urinary tract infections, diarrhea or dysentery.
Phrmacological Chinese research has found this formula able to inhibit bacillus dysentery, virus, streptococcus bacteria, staphylococcus bacteria and diplococcus bacteria (as seen in pneumonia).
Whereas the original formula simply contains andrographis paniculata (50%), dandelion (25%) and Isatis root (25%). Planetary formula gives it an even broader applicability with the addition of echinacea, goldenseal, olive leaf, garlic, licorice and ginger.
While many of the herbs in this formula are well recognized in trade, two of them, andrographis and isatis root need to be better appreciated.
Andrographis (Chuan Xin Lian) is a common Chinese folk remedy whose poetic name means "thread the heart lotus." It is also known as green chiretta or kariyat. It has a bitter flavor and a cold, antiinflammatory energy. It enters the large intestine, lung, stomach and small intestine organ meridians, giving it a wide range of applications. Of course its ability to clear heat generally makes it useful for the liver.
It is a powerful and relatively cheap herb that can easily replace some of the commercial use-burden on such popular antiinflammatories as goldenseal and echinacea with which it is combined in this formula. Besides its antiinflammatory properties, both Chinese and Western herbal research has confirmed its effectiveness against a variety of cancers including breast and lung cancer. It is used for all types of inflammatory conditions including skin sores, carbuncles, snake and other venomous bites, eczema, psoriasis, urinary tract infections. For those who are interested in the pharmacology; it contains andrographalide, neo-andrographolide and beta sitosterol.
Isatis root (Ban Lan Gen) is another antiinflammatory herb that treats all types of bacterial and viral infections. It contains indoxyl-beta-glucoside, beta-sitosterol, isatin, arginine, glutamine, proline, tyrosine. It has been shown to be very effective for sore throats, fevers, epidemic disorders, including mumps, acute tonsillitis and hepatitis.
The name Echinacea-Goldenseal-Olive Leaf Combination, like many other Planetary formulas, is so named, because most people know what these three herbs are for, but often, in many of the Planetary formulas, it is the more unfamiliar herbs that are indeed the most powerful.
Echinacea-Goldenseal-Olive Leaf Combination was formulated by Lesley Tierra and is a new Planetary formula that has already shown itself to be popular and effective. We think that with the increasingly frightening prospect of bacterial resistance caused by overuse of drug antibiotics, every household should have this formula on hand and it should be the first to be tried at least for the first couple of days. If the condition persists, of course, one should then seek professional medical advice.
Echinacea-Goldenseal-Olive Leaf Combination is available in pill form, and is currently offered at a 20% discount in our on-line herb store.
