History: The name Vervain is derived from the Celtic ferfaen from fer, 'to drive away' and faen, 'a stone' as it was used for affections of the bladder, especially calculus (stone formation).
The name Verbena was the classical Roman name for altar plants in general and for this species in particular. Priests used it for sacrifices from where the name Herba Sacra comes.
Flowering Period :July to September.
Habitat :Swales, damp thickets, shores, moist fields, meadows, and waste areas. wide spread in central south,south west China and other provinces including Shan Xi,Shaan Xi,Gan Su,Xin Jiang,Jiang Su,An Hui,Zhe Jiang,Jiang Xi,Fu Jian,etc.
Harvest :Herb and root.
Legends: Vervain was believed to possess magical and aphrodisiac properties and was once widely used in various rites and incantations associated with witchcraft and sorcery.
According to legend, vervain was used on the Mount of Calvary to staunch Christ's wounds.
Roman soldiers carried vervain to protect them in battle.
