Verbena officinalis Pharmacological Effects.

Vervain herb Extract INCI Name Verbena Officinalis Extract CAS 84961-67-1 EINECS ELINCS No 284-657-0 Blue Vervain Herb extract Verbena hastata photo picture image Anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect: Water and alcohol extract of Verbena officinalis shows anti-inflammatory effects for the conjunctival sac of rabbits caused by mustard oil inhalation,alcohol extracts release stronger anti-inflammatory effects than hydrolic extract. In the alcohol extract the part of water-soluble shows stronger effects than water-insoluble part. Water extract of Verbena officinalis shows analgesic effect on rabbits pain induced by pulp electrical stimulation,pain relief effects appear since 1 hour after administration, disappeared after 3 hours;alcohol extract still shows analgesic effect even in six hours after administration, water soluble part of the alcohol extract shows stronger analgesic effect,water insoluble part does not shows similar analgesic effect.

 Antitussive effect: Verbena officinalis decoction shows some level of antitussive effect, its antitussive active components identified as beta-sitosterol and verbenalin.

 Uterus Effects: At the concentration of 1.6 * 10-2g/ml,exciting effects identified as to the muscle of the rat uterine muscle and non-pregnancy human uterus muscle. In rat uterine muscle experiment,estrus period specimens shows most sensitive to Verbena officinalis adnimistration,administration of Verbena officinalis often caused tension and contraction amplitude increase at the same time,in experiment of other phases of the specimens results shows often only contraction amplitude increased. The muscle of the human uterus response weakly to Verbena officinalis,only the tension some changes. In rat uterine muscle experiment,Verbenaceae and PGE2 are mutually reinforcing, and effects of Verbenaceae with PGF2a only comes sum efffects.Verbena officinalis boost enough excitement to uterine smooth muscle concentration,yet has no apparent effect to jejunal smooth muscle,also can not enhance PGE2 on the role of jejunal smooth muscle.

 Other Effects: Verbenalin shows small amount of peripheral sympathetic excitement, a large doseshows inhibition;Prompt mammalian milk secretion.
