Kelp, commonly referred to as seaweed, grows along coastlines around the world. Botanically, this plant is classified as algae. It is a rich source of natural vitamins and minerals, including essential trace minerals. Kelp is dependent upon the sea for its nourishment - an excellent source since the sea is the repository of all the minerals that have been washed from the land through the millennia. This plant can grow as much as two feet per day, and the entire plant has been used medicinally. It's nickname, Bladderwrack, refers to the bladder like air pods (vesicles) that help keep this herb afloat on the ocean. Kelp also makes a wonderful garden fertilizer. The primary chemical constituents of Kelp include algin, carrageenan, iodine, potassium, bromine, mucopolysaccharides, mannitol, alginic acid, kainic acid, laminine, histamine, zeaxanthin, protein, and vitamins B-2 and C. Kelp is a nutritional source that is used to promote healthy glandular functions, focusing especially on the thyroid. Kelp is especially high in iodine, which must be present for proper glandular function. The large amounts of iodine found in Kelp are important in the treatment of an under-active thyroid. Consequently, Kelp may contribute to weight loss if the weight gain is directly related to thyroid disorders. Kelp contains algin, a fiber that absorbs toxins and nutrients from the digestive system. Kelp also helps improve digestion, stimulates kidney function, increases circulation, and purifies the blood. Kelp has also been known to treat inflamed joints and tissues caused by arthritis and rheumatism. Furthermore, Kelp enhances the immune system and eliminates the negative effects that stress may have on the body. It can help absorb and remove drugs, chemicals, heavy metals, and radioactive strontium 90 from the body. It can also help to normalize overly low blood pressure. Known topical uses for this herb include its use as a compress or oil for arthritic joints, as a bath herb for cellulite and weight loss and as a lotion for its skin-softening qualities.

Kelp (Fucus vesiculosus) is a type of brown seaweed, moderate in size, that grows in regions with cold coastlines, including those of the northwestern United States and northern Europe. There are several varieties of kelp: true kelp, which thrives in cool seas; giant kelp, and bladder kelp, which grow in the North Pacific. Giant kelp is so named because it grows to 213 ft (65 m). Kelp anchors itself to rocky surfaces via tentacle-like roots. From these roots grows a slender stalk with long, leaf-like blades.

Kelp belongs to the Fucaceae family. Other names for Fucus vesiculosus are kelpware, black-tang, bladderfucus, cutweed, and bladderwrack. The main constituents of kelp include phenolic compounds, mucopolysaccharides, algin, polar lipids, and glycosyl ester diglycerides. Kelp also contains protein, carbohydrates, and essential fatty acids.

Kelp contains approximately 30 minerals. It is a rich source of iodine, calcium, sulfur, and silicon. Other minerals include phosphorus, iron, sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride, copper, zinc, manganese, barium, boron, chromium, lithium, nickel, silver, titanium, vanadium, aluminum, strontium, bismuth, chlorine, cobalt, gallium, tin, and zirconium. Kelp also contains vitamins C, E, D, K, and B complex. The highest concentrations of these vitamins and minerals are found in the tissues of kelp. Since kelp is such a valuable source of nutrients, it is often recommended as a dietary supplement, particularly for people with mineral deficiencies.

 Kelp Parts

Blade: leaf-like structure that use the sun's energy for photosynthesis
 Stipe: stem-like structure
Float: air filled bladder at the base of each blade that keeps the plant up toward the surface as it gathers light for photosynthesis
Frond:  the part which holds the plant to the ocean floor -- it is like a root, but does not supply water and nutrients to the rest of the plant.
Holdfast:  Unlike a root, the kelp's holdfast doesn't supply water and nutrients to the rest of the plant. A holdfast keeps algae in place so currents and tides don't wash the organism away.
