Preparations:
The kelp used medicinally in modern times is generally harvested in kelp farms. These farms help preserve the natural balance of the sea, which is disrupted when large amounts of naturally growing seaweed are removed. Farming kelp also helps to ensure that the kelp retains its nutritional value. Kelp loses valuable nutrients when it is washed ashore. When kelp is harvested, it is cut, dried, then ground into powder. It is this powder that is encapsulated or pressed into tablets.
Kelp is available in bulk form either dried or as a ground powder. It is also sold as granules, capsules, tablets, or tinctures. Granulated or powdered kelp can be added to food as a salt substitute.
The recommended daily dose for adults is 10~15 mg. Kelp can also be made into a tea. To create an infusion, 1 cup of boiling water is poured over 2-3 tsp of dried or powdered kelp. The tea is steeped for 10 minutes, and can be drunk three times daily.
Dosage and How much to take?
Tincture: Take for thyroid deficiency, as a gentle metabolic stimulant, or for rheumatic conditions.
Infusion: Take as the tincture. Can be used as part of a weight-reducing program, especially if obesity is linked to a slow metabolism, but it should not be regarded as an easy method for losing weight.
Tablets/Capsules: Take 3 - 6 a day as a metabolic stimulant. Can help reduce obesity related to thyroid under activity.
Infused Oil: Macerate 500 g dried kelp overnight in 500 ml sunflower oil. Heat in a water bath for two hours and strain. Use the oil externally for arthritic joint pains or rheumatism.
Slimming Powder:
1 1/3 oz (50 g) kelp powder
1 oz (30 g) marshmallow
3/4 oz (20 g) licorice powder
Combine all the ingredients and preserve in a glass jar away from light. Take 1 T (15 g) powder before meals, diluted in 1/2 cup (125 ml) warm water. This mixture fills the stomach, produces a loss of appetite and softens the digestive mucous membranes. It provokes weight loss and acts as a laxative and a tonic.
10-15 g. To be decocted, boiled, steamed for oral adminitration, or used as an ingredient of a prescription.
It may usefully be taken in tablet form as a dietary supplement or as an infusion by pouring a cup of boiling water onto 2-3 teaspoonfuls of the dried herb and leaving it to steep for 10 minutes. This should be drunk three times a day.
Seaweed Mineral Bath:
Bladderwrack (Fucus spp.) about 40 grams
Muslin pouch or cotton scarf
Place Bladderwrack Flakes in pouch or scarf, tie well closed with elastic or string (loose seaweed flakes may clog drain).
Throw pouch in hot bath water. Jump in .Gently squeeze pouch and rub algin (rich seaweed gel) all over body and face. Breath in fresh ocean breeze (not fishy at all). Relax!
Bladderwrack contains all the minerals that your body needs. It is very nourishing to the skin and soothes muscles and joints.I am a professional Wildcrafter of seaweed, and we sell high quality kelp (Nereocysiis leutkeana) and Bladderwrack (Fucus spp.) in whole, flakes or powdered form. We also sell Seaweed Bath Pouches and all natural Kelp soap.
Caution: Do not consume any sugar, brewer's yeast or too much starch at the same time, for there is a risk of too much gas!Should not use kelp on pregnant women.
Precautions:
People should not gather wild kelp because it may contain contaminants absorbed from the sea.
People with high blood pressure or a history of thyroid problems should consult their healthcare practitioner before using kelp. The high sodium content of Fucus vesiculosus may make high blood pressure worse. Kelp isn't recommended for people on a low-sodium diet.
Excessive consumption of kelp can provide the body with too much iodine and interfere with thyroid function. Consumers should use it only as directed.
Side effects: There are no known side effects, but some people may be sensitive or allergic to kelp. Common allergic symptoms include mild stomachache.
Interactions: Fucus vesiculosus shouldn't be taken with thyroid medications.
