Common Knowledge Why doesn't my regular doctor know or recommend dietary supplements?Dietary supplements are not legally considered "medicines". They are intended to be supplements to the diet, even though many herbs have roles that are more therapeutic in nature.

How do I know which herbs are safe?

First, dietary supplements are not legally considered "medicines". They are intended to be supplements to the diet, even though many herbs have roles that are more therapeutic in nature. Mainly, however, physicians are not trained in herbal medicine in medical school; therefore, many physicians are unfamiliar with how botanicals fit into medical care and how they should be properly used.

Presently, there is enormous demand by physicians and pharmacists to learn about this "new" segment of health care, and a concomitant rise in educational products and services available to them. Expect to see herbal medicine play an increasingly important role in U.S. health care in the coming years as mainstream medical practitioners and health management organizations (HMOs) grow more educated in this field.
