A spice is a dried seed, fruit, root, bark, leaf, or vegetative substance used in nutritionally insignificant quantities as a food additive for the purpose of flavour, colour, or as a preservative that kills harmful bacteria or prevents their growth.Spices, however, are dried and often ground or grated into a powder.
Many of these substances are also used for other purposes, such as medicine, religious rituals, cosmetics, perfumery or eating as vegetables. For example, turmeric is also used as a preservative; liquorice as a medicine; garlic as a vegetable. In some cases they are referred to by different terms.

This apple is outstanding for eating out of hand or for baking or making applesauce.
Garfish:This is a well-known fish, with a snake like body, long, pointy nose and shiny silver sides. Greenish back. It weighs up to 1.3 kilos. Small garfish are fried, while larger ones are either grilled or oven baked with onions, garlic and tomatoes. It isn't particularly tasty, however, it does have the advantage of having few bones.

Almost every cuisine on our planet has found an important role for garlic. Europeans mince it raw and add it to salad dressings, or saute it and use it to flavor their sauces. Asian cooks add it to their stir-fries; Indian cooks to their curries; Hispanic cooks to meats and vegetables. And Americans have lately taken a fancy to roasting whole bulbs, and then spreading the garlic like a soft cheese on bread or crackers. Garlic's good for you, too. Researchers believe that garlic can bolster the immune system, lower blood pressure and prevent heart disease, and at least some people believe that it can ward off vampires and insects. The only downside is that raw or undercooked garlic tends to linger on the breath, though many people are more than willing to pay that price.
Cooking Tips:To peel it easier, dip it in warm water for 5 minutes.

Used when fully ripe and the rind has hardened. It is peeled and the seeds removed before cooking. Used for pumpkin pie and soup. They may also be pickled or made into chutney. The salted and dry-roasted seeds are eaten as a snack food.

This is a firm, tart apple that's good for baking, making pies, and eating out of hand. They tend to have thick skins, so you might want to peel them before serving.

A grapefruit is a large, slightly tart kind of citrus fruit. The rind is mostly yellow, and often tinged with green or red. Grapefruits are categorized by the color of their pulp: red, pink, or white (which is more honey-colored than white). The color of the pulp doesn't affect the flavor. When buying grapefruit, select specimens that are smaller, thin-skinned, and heavy for their size. Some varieties are seedless. They're best in the winter and spring.
Cooking Tip:If they are too bitter, add salt to sweeten them.

The fruit of a vine Vitis vinifera, V. labrusca or V. rotundifolia and hybrids, grown worldwide where the winters are cool and summers long and hot. The berries normally grow in clusters and range from green to dark purple and from 5 to 30 mm in diameter. The flesh varies from sour to sweet and succulent and is usually relatively firm but juicy and may contain up to 3 inedible seeds. Used for wine making, as a dessert fruit for decoration and garnishing and when dried for use as dried vine fruits (raisins, currants and sultanas).

A very well known fish with a long body and silvery-ash in color, which becomes almost black towards the back. White belly. Quite often its flesh has an unpleasant, boggy smell. As it's rather heavy on the stomach, this fish should be eaten grilled. Most people, however, tend to eat the larger ones boiled.

The tree is valued for its dried rind which is rich in acids and possesses marked antiseptic properties. It contains tartaric acid reducing sugars and phosphoric acid (as calcium triphosphate). It limits the synthesis of fatty acids in the muscles and liver lipogenesis (production of fat) by inhibiting the enzyme ATP-citrate lyase.
The fruits contain about 30% acid (calculated as citric acid) on the dry basis which is essentially (-)-hydroxy-citric acid. A decoction of the fruit rind is given in rheumatism and bowel complaints. The resin possesses purgative properties.

There are three main chemical constituents in Gotu kola. The first is asiaticoside, which is a triterpene glycoside and classified as an antibiotic. It aids in wound healing and has been used in the treatment of leprosy and tuberculosis in the Far East. The second constituent is a pair of chemicals, brahmoside and brahminoside, which are saponin glycosides. These are diuretic in nature and have a slightly sedative action in large doses. Finally, there is madecassoside, a glycoside that is a strong anti-inflammatory agent. The plant is also a source of Vitamin K, magnesium, calcium and sodium.

Grape seed extract Proanthocyanidins refer to procyanidin mixtures extracted from grape (Vitis vinifera) seeds. Procyanidins are derivatives of the flavan-3-o1 class of flavonoids. This class includes (+)-catechin, commonly referred to as catechin, and (-)-epicatechin, commonly referred to as epicatechin.

Green tea is derived from the leaves of the tea plant and it is rich in beneficial compounds called catechins. Green Tea is lightly processed to retain these substances so the active constituents remain unaltered in the herb. It is thought to have excellent thermogenic properties to enhance weight loss.

Gymnema sylvestre is a large, woody climber.
Its principal constituent is gymnemic acid which has anti-diabetic properties. The plant is stomachic, stimulant, laxative and diuretic. It abolishes the taste of sugar and is believed to neutralize excessive sugar present in the body in diabetes mellitus. The leaf extracts contain gymnemic acid which is said to inhibit hyperglycemia. It has also been shown to have a regenerative effect on pancreatic beta cells and is insulinotropic.

The word ginger comes from the ancient Sanskrit singabera, meaning 'shaped like a horn'.It first appeared in the writings of Confucius in the 5th century BC. and it has been used medicinally in the West for at least 2000 years.It was introduced by the Spaniards to the Americas and is now cultivated extensively in the West Indies. The Portuguese introduced it to West Africa. It was traditionally used to warm the stomach and dispel chills. In the 18th century it was added to remedies to modify their action and to reduce their irritant effects upon the stomach. Ginger is still used in this way in China to reduce the toxicity of some herbs. The Chinese prescribe ginger tea for delayed menstruation.It is rich in vitamin C, and Chinese mariners ate it fresh to ward off scurvy.

During the Middle Ages, burdock was valued for treating a host of ailments. English herbalists used burdock root for boils, scurvy (a disease caused by vitamin C deficiency, leading to bleeding, gum disease, and weakness), diabetes, and rheumatism (disorders characterized by joint discomfort and loss of mobility). Burdock also played an important role in Native American herbal medicine, and American herbalists have used the roots and seeds of this plant for two centuries.

Goldenseal is the root of Hydrastis Canadensis. Goldenseal root is famous for use against sore throat and strep throat, effective against bladder infections. It is the alkaloid berberine which makes goldenseal root an effective remedy against protozoa, bacteria and fungi.

Ligustrum lucidum is a Chinese medicinal plant that is often used in combination with other herbs in botanical formulas. There are several species of Ligustrum that are thought to have different medicinal properties. Traditionally, Ligustrum lucidum is used to treat diminished eye sight, dizziness, fever, insomnia, and lower back pain. Some herbalists also use it to treat side effects caused by chemotherapy and to increase immunity in cancer patients. In vitro studies have shown that the fruits of Ligustrum lucidum have antitumor, immunostimulatory, antioxidative, antiviral, antimutagenic, and hepatoprotective properties.

Also known as malt, germinated barley is the end product that comes from the fermentation and drying of barley, an annual cereal plant that grows worldwide. Germinated barley is made by soaking barley corn in water at a properly maintained temperature and humidity, then taking the sprouts out after they reach a length of approximately .5 centimeters. At that point, they are dried. The sprouts can either be used raw, or after being parched.

A much-branched evergreen, aromatic shrub.
The volatile oil obtained by the steam distillation of the leaves of G. fragrantissima is identical to Wintergreen oil, obtained from G. procumbens.
The principal constituent of the oil is methyl salicylate. It is stimulant, carminative and antiseptic. It is applied externally in the form of liniment or ointment in rheumatism, sciatica and neuralgia.

Gloriosa superba is a striking tuberous climbing plant with wavy-edged yellow and red flowers found throughout India. The cylindrical rhizomes usually bifurcate to 'V' shape. The acuminate tips of the leaves spiraled and serve as tendrils for climbing. The perianth lobes are brightly colored and wavy margined. Colchicine is the major compound isolated from the rhizomes. They have abortifacient, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory and antileprotic properties.
In Ayurveda, the tuber is anthelmintic and abortifacient. Kalahari is cultivated mainly in south India.

Glycyrrhiza glabra is a perennial herb in the subtropical and warm temperate regions. None of the liquorice species occurs in India in the wild. But its use has been reported for a long time in traditional literature.
The principal constituent of licorice is glycyrrhizin. Licorice is used for the treatment of asthma, acute and chronic bronchitis and chronic cough. It modulates the immune system and has shown remarkable immuno-stimulant properties. It has an antioxidant activity. It is a mild anti-inflammatory for arthritis and rheumatism and is used to treat gastric, duodenal and esophageal ulceration or inflammation, heartburn and mouth ulcers. The plant contains phytoestrogens in the form of isoflavones such as formononetin; glabrone, neoliquiritin and hispaglabridin A & B.
It alleviates irritable conditions of the mucus membrane, and strengthens the immune system and provides resistance in recurring infections.
